GATORS NOTEBOOK; Antwine out for Season

Article excerpt

GAINESVILLE - Florida coach Urban Meyer confirmed Tuesday that sophomore defensive tackle Brandon Antwine is out for the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Meyer did not specify which knee was injured. Antwine had been playing well after missing most of last season with a back injury that caused muscle deterioration and left him wheelchair-bound for some time.

Antwine has been nominated for the Football Writers Association of America's Courage Award because of the back injury.

Now, Antwine is back on the comeback trail.

"He's like a son to me," Meyer said.

The Gators are already without freshman lineman Matt Patchan, who is still out with a medial collateral ligament sprain in his left knee.

While starting nose guard Lawrence Marsh is fully healed from his MCL sprain, the Gators will still need a collaborative effort from several other linemen to make up for the loss of Antwine.

Redshirt freshman Jaye Howard and sophomore Torrey Davis could see extended snaps.

Sophomore end Carlos Dunlap will also probably see playing time.

"That's a tough deal for us right now," Meyer said of Antwine's injury. …
