I MET a lovely lady at the Tesco check-out last week. Her name is Pauline and as she was ringing my shopping through the till, we got chatting about common sense or the lack of it, particularly when it comes down to basic things like food packaging. At a time when so much information is being fed to us about global warming, the importance of recycling and using biodegradable products, why then does the food chain waste so much unnecessary packing on foods that do not need wrapping in the first place? I really enjoyed our chat Pauline and people in the food industry could learn an awful lot from smart people like your good self.

I HAVE been told for many years now that I possess an abundance of common sense and I know this is true most of the time. Having said that, there have been times in my life when I have done extremely stupid things, the greatest being something I did last Tuesday. I was making homemade soup to feed the masses: My darling in-laws who were coming for dinner that night, extra soup for a business meeting with many mouths to feed, with the intention of also having plenty of soup left over to give to my gorgeous stepson Adam and his boyfriend, Liam, who I'm also crazy about.

The blade for the hand blender came loose, so instead of tapping it down with a spoon or something similar, I used my middle finger to push it down, cutting myself badly in the process. I am a very strong woman, bold and assertive by nature when I need to be, and fearless most of the time, however when it comes to accidents, I'm one of the biggest squeamish wimps under the sun. As my finger bled badly I felt clammy and faint.

I called the NHS Direct Helpline and they were excellent and very supportive. The nurse I was speaking to asked me to describe the wound to her but I simply couldn't look at it. …
