Farming: HGCA Adds 21 Varieties to Its List of Recommendations

A TOTAL of 21 varieties have been added to the HGCA Recommended Lists for 2009/10.

It has been a bumper year for new winter wheats with eight new recommendations spread across all four nabim groups.

"There really is something for everyone," said HGCA technical manager, Bill Handley.

"We have a new Group 1, three Group 2's, one Group 3 and three Group 4's."

Gallant is the first variety since 2002 to go straight into nabim group1 and it is higher yielding than Xi19, with better grain quality and agronomic characters.

The new nabim Group 2 varieties Panorama and Ketchum are very high yielding, while Qplus is the first bread-making variety with orange wheat blossom midge resistance.

Scout is a nabim Group 3 variety with good grain characteristics. Viscount and Cassius are soft-milling Group 4 varieties while Grafton is hard-milling.

Four varieties have been removed from the list including Riband which was first recommended in 1989 so came close to a 20 year reign on the list. …
