FIVE CHEERS; Help for Homeless

Article excerpt

Homeless men pound the pavement a lot. And that can be hard on their feet. And their shoes.

No one knows that better than an orthopedic physician.

That's why recently doctors from Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute participated in "Our Hearts to Your Soles," a national effort to provide free foot screenings and lightly used footwear to 100 homeless men at The Sulzbacher Center.

The footwear was donated by Red Wing Shoe Company.

Each year, it gives shoes to Soles4Soles, Inc., an international shoe charity dedicated to providing free footwear to needy people, according to a press release from Soles4Soles.

Homeless people tend to wear worn, ill-fitting shoes, and they overlook foot and ankle problems until they have disabling pain.

Since its founding three years ago, and through help and support from Soles4Soles, Our Hearts to Your Soles has screened, fitted and provided footwear to more than 3,000 homeless men.

This was the first year that Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute joined 39 other cities to help the homeless with their foot problems.

Let's hope it's not the last. Because if homeless men are to ever get on a path out of poverty, they need healthy feet to put them there.
