IMAGES of Newcastle United icons including Joe Harvey, Malcolm Macdonald, Alan Shearer and Kevin Keegan yesterday lit up the winter.

More than 500 lights and dozens of images will transform medieval town walls into an after-dark adventure in Tyneside heritage.

Glow, which started last night, is a free five-day event using huge light projections to throw the spotlight on the 13th Century town walls from 4.30pm until 9.30pm each night until Monday, as part of Newcastle Gateshead Winter Festival.

Visitors will be able to play a giant interactive fruit machine featuring symbols of Geordie culture past and present, projected on the West Walls between Bath Lane and Gallowgate.

Images including Thomas Bewick prints and old maps will be projected on the neighbouring House of Recovery.

Glow will also light up Sallyport Tower, once one of the main defensive fortifications for the medieval town, which looks out over the Quayside and is on Tower Street close to City Road. …
