A TEESSIDE teenager has sailed away with a top award after a great year on the water.

Sixteen-year-old Dean Crangle was named as the Royal Yachting Association's Yorkshire and Humberside Young Sailor of the Year.

As well as sailing at Tees and Hartlepool Yacht Club, during the summer months Dean spends much of his time sailing at Thornton Steward Sailing Club near Leeming in North Yorkshire.

And it was for his hard work and dedication at Thornton Steward that he won the Yorkshire Young Sailor Award.

"Dean is one of the youngest qualified RYA Assistant Instructors in the UK," Malcolm Cummins, Principal Instructor at Thornton Steward Sailing Club, said.

"He is a huge asset to Thornton Steward Sailing Club where he trains and coaches the Junior Section of the club.

"He is a great communicator and his young age makes him an ideal role model for younger members of the club."

Dean has been sailing for five years and is currently studying for a National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science at Brinkburn Sixth Form College. …
