NORTH East-born Sir Bobby Charlton received a lifetime achievement award last night during the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony.

The trophy was presented by his brother Jack, who said Sir Bobby was "the greatest player I've ever seen".

Wiping away tears, Ashington-born Sir Bobby said: "I'm absolutely knocked out with this.

"I was fortunate enough to be good at the game. I found football was easy; I never understood when people couldn't play this game of football."

The former Manchester United great thanked his wife and said he was proud to have been part of the England team that won the 1966 World Cup.

Sir Bobby and his brother Jack were once said to have become estranged, but last night's ceremony brought them together, along with other members of the all-conquering England team of 1966.

Cyclist and Olympic triple gold medallist Chris Hoy won the Sports Personality of the Year award. Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton was second and double gold medal swimmer Rebecca Adlington was third. …
