WHAT a year 2008 turned out to be - as the University of Teesside went from strength to strength and gained wider national and international recognition for its achievements.

As Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graham Henderson, told the 3,000 students celebrating their academic success at the graduation ceremonies in Middlesbrough Town Hall - 2008 saw the Teesside centre of higher education taking several more strides on its journey to developing its reputation for excellence.

The number of students continued to grow and should reach 25,000 this coming academic year - making it the second largest university in North-east England in terms of overall student numbers Teesside also received one of largest grants ever awarded to a UK university for working with business and industry and was recently described as "an exemplar of good practice in working with employers" by the chairman of the Government's Education Select Committee, Phil Willis, MP.

Overseas students ranked Teesside number one out of 93 universities in the UK in the world's largest survey of international student opinion - the International Student Barometer.

This placed Middlesbrough's university top for "living, employability prospects, financial support and careers advice". In all, 94% of international students at Teesside declared themselves satisfied with the overall support they received.

Teesside also celebrated being one of the top ten universities in the country for overall student satisfaction in no less than eight major subject categories in the 2008 National Student Survey. Design and Media students at Teesside were the most satisfied with their courses in the UK; and Law scored an amazing 98% satisfaction result. Overall, Teesside's students ranked their university one of the top three for learning resources and access to IT facilities.

The media-led university league tables showed more success, with Teesside's animation courses being ranked in the top 20 internationally by 3D World magazine.

Mechanical Engineering provision at Teesside was ranked in first place by The Guardian's Good University Guide; and Teesside achieved its highest ever ranking in the Sunday Times University League Table. …
