Lottery Boost for Town Library Revamp

A PROJECT to revamp a Northumberland town's ageing library has been given a pounds 1.5m boost by the lottery.

Haltwhistle's Mechanics' Institute library building will be partially demolished in the pounds 2.2m scheme and redeveloped to create a three-storey facility comprising a new library, community activity space and offices.

Now it has been confirmed that the project will be aided by a pounds 1.47m grant from the Big Lottery Fund's community libraries programme.

Provisional approval for the scheme was given in October 2007, but it is now all systems go following confirmation of the vital lottery funding. The balance of the cost of the work is being met by Northumberland County Council and Tynedale District Council.

The scheme involves preserving the original Victorian stone-built Mechanics' Institute as a local landmark, while making it suitable for 21st Century needs.

The rear of the revamped building will have a three-storey extension to house the library, community centre and office space. …
