TRAINEE diver Jamie Campbell was honoured at an awards ceremony celebrating the UK's Armed Forces.

The 25-year-old Royal Navy recruit, from Newcastle, was crowned Best Recruit at the Military Awards, organised by the Ministry of Defence.

Prince Charles, wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and a host of celebrities gathered at Hampton Court Palace to salute the winners and hand out the gongs.

Jamie, a former pupil of St Cuthbert's School, Denton Burn, was presented with his award by England rugby legend Lawrence Dallaglio and TV presenter Kirsty Gallacher.

Jamie said: "I didn't expect to win. During training I was just concentrating on giving 100% and helping my friends out just as they were there for me.

"It was an honour to be nominated and to be acknowledged alongside some of the other nominees. To be in the same room as some of them was amazing.

"When I heard my name called out, it was such a shock it took about an hour to sink in. …
