THE explanation from Coun Simon Reed explaining the problems facing his administration in relation to Alnwick's High School replacement is true as far as it goes, but it does not go far enough (Voice of the North, December 19).

What we are looking for in North Northumberland is an unequivocal renewal of the Liberal Democrats' specific commitment to this project, not one diluted in assurances about "schools right across the county".

He quotes the Government's criteria of "social and educational need" to justify future funding, suggesting that if a school like the Duchess's High School performs well, as indeed it does, in spite of its unsuitable premises, then it will slip down the queue. No reward or incentive for success then, just a well done and carry on. That simply will not do.

Given that The Duchess's School performs so well despite the state of its buildings, how will improving those of schools in "deprived" areas lead to better educational results? …
