A YEAR after cheating death in a plane crash, hero pilot Jim Martin is looking forward to returning to the job he loves.

It is 12 months since the air ambulance chopper pilot was horrifically injured when he lost control of the microlight he was flying and smashed into a clump of trees.

Now Jim, who miraculously survived the accident, which happened over a golf course near Felton, Northumberland, is planning to return to work in the new year.

The pilot, who has escaped death three times, is hoping to have a medical in the new year and return to his job with the Great North Air Ambulance by the end of January.

"I'm really looking forward to getting back to work but I have to wait for my licence to come back and then I can have a medical," he said.

"Every day I am getting stronger and I can nearly walk without my sticks now. The longer it is delayed, the stronger I will be."

Jim, from Hexham, broke both ankles, shattered his jaw, fractured his skull and broke his arm in the crash, which happened when the tail came off his plane as he was flying over Northumberland with pal Jon Ker. …
