Police Briefs; Mom Finds Wounded Son on Steps of Home

A Northwest Jacksonville mother awoke last week to find her son lying on the front steps of her home with a gunshot wound in his upper abdomen, according to a police report.

The son, 27, had life-threatening injuries and was taken to Shands Jacksonville, the report said. As of Monday afternoon, he was in serious condition, according to a Shands spokeswoman.

He appeared unconscious when police arrived just after midnight Dec. 18, the report said. His mother told police that when she opened the front door, he said: "I was shot on Mitchell Street," which is less than a mile away.

Police at the scene were not able to obtain any more information about the shooting.

The following are crimes and other incidents reported recently on the Northside and in surrounding neighborhoods:

ARMED ROBBERY:

1000 BLOCK OF FLORIDA AVENUE -- Police were told a man pointed a rifle, possibly an AK-47, at a taxi driver and demanded money when he was dropped off just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday. The driver, a 26-year-old Northside man, said the gunman took $190 and ran west along nearby railroad tracks.

2000 BLOCK OF WEST 40TH STREET -- While entering his front door about 3:40 p.m. Sunday, a 46-year-old man was approached from behind and a man pointed a gun at his head, according to a police report. The victim said he handed $290 to the man, who fired a single shot as he was running. No injuries were reported.

1700 BLOCK OF WHITNER STREET -- A 37-year-old Northside man told police he was walking to a store about 10 p.m. Dec. 17 when a man pointed a rifle, possibly an AK-47, at him. He said two other men went through his pockets and took his wallet containing $251, then told him to walk down West Seventh Street, a cross street.
