Opposition to Plan for Student Village Housing Up to 2,000

ANGRY opposition has met plans for a new student village being proposed for Newcastle.

Developers want to provide accommodation for up to 2,000 students on the fringe of the city centre near the new Northumbria University campus.

But local ward councillors claim the neighbourhood is already saturated with students and they will be objecting on behalf of residents. The Tyneside-based Metnor Property Group is proposing to redevelop the former Berger paint factory site along with nearby land in the Portland Road and Stoddart Street area of Shieldfield.

Previous plans to build family homes on the land, empty for nearly 20 years, have been shelved, partly because of potential traffic problems.

The latest scheme, called Portland Green, involves 10 new buildings to accommodate up to 2,000 students, shops, cafes, medical facilities and offices.

A planning application is expected to go before councillors early this year. If permission is granted the complex is expected to open in stages between 2010 and 2012. …
