MARTYN Dobson was a committed member of Cleveland Wheelers and even after he stopped racing he continued to wear his Wheelers T-shirts with pride.

After joining the club as a teenager he notched up a string of race victories.

In 1994, he was Cleveland Under-16 champion and English schools champion.

In 1998 he led his team to fourth place and a club record in the National Team Pursuit and also became Scottish Team Time Trial Champion.

In 2000 he won three golds and a silver as a member of the University of Teesside team in the Students' National Track Championship at the Manchester Velodrome.

In one of his final races in 2003 he won the Hartlepool Carnival Road Race.

Fellow Cleveland Wheelers brothers Marcus and Daniel Smith, 35, and 29 from Saltburn, have been close friends since they were all junior riders.

Marcus remembers many of Martyn's racing successes.

"As a junior he scored an emphatic one-two victory in Lancaster and again in Dewsbury with his team-mate Dan Smith, taking it in turn to attack the peloton (the pack) until they both escaped. …
