Athletics: Twell Up against a Stellar Field

EUROPEAN junior champion Stephanie Twell faces a massive task if she is to maintain her unbeaten winter record in the Bupa Great Edinburgh International Cross Country, writes DAVID MARTIN.

Twell will be among a stellar field at Holyrood Park on Saturday - including Mestawet Tufa and Linet Masai, who last March claimed world championship silver and bronze medals at the venue.

Joining the Ethiopian and Kenyan duo in the 5.6kilometres race will be many other top African stars - among them emerging talent Genzebe Dibaba. The 17-year-old Ethiopian is the younger sister of Olympic 5000m and 1,0000m gold medallist Tirunesh Dibaba.

Masai will start favourite on Saturday. But Twell is out to prove a point - and is in form, after winning the Antrim International cross country last weekend.

Event spokesman Andy Caine is delighted with the calibre of entries. "We've attracted some of the world's premier women athletes - and among these are many who, given their age, will be candidates for track medals at the 2012 London Olympics," he said. …
