A FIRE broke out at a Tyneside radiator factory today.

Flames ripped through the roof of the Myson building on the Team Valley, Gateshead, at around 10.45am.

The unit, on Queensway, was evacuated as fire engines from two different stations arrived to battle the blaze.

No workers were injured and staff were given the go-ahead to re-enter the premises after around an hour and a half.

Forklift driver Lee Ellison, from Fence Houses, County Durham, saw the flames. The 25-year-old said: "They were coming out the roof.

"It was quite bad but there was a lot of smoke. It is not a good start to the new year but hopefully there will not be too much damage. We don't know what happened yet."

Another worker, who did not want to be named, said: "It started about 10.45am. The alarms went off and we all ran out.

"There was so much smoke it was unbelievable but the firefighters got here very quickly. …
