NEWCASTLE Cricket Club are celebrating two awards - three years after saving their ground from closure, The national Club Mirror Awards have recognised the efforts which went into rebuilding the club with the accolade of Cricket Club of the Year.

The Northern Rock North East Reional Premier League, of which the club are a member, has also rewarded the quality of the groundsmanship at Jesmond with the "Ground of the Year" award.

Chairman Mike Randell said: "We are delighted the tremendous enthusiasm of our volunteers, players and support team has been marked in such a very special way.

"We are extremely grateful for the continued year-on-year investment by the Royal Grammar School, which took on the lease and helped save the Jesmond ground for future generations.

"We also could not have managed any of this progress without generous grants or without our sponsors."

The club's ground now boasts a new digital scoreboard thanks to a grant from the Sita Trust. …
