Speedway: Popular Sneddon Returns to the Fold

NEWCASTLE Diamonds have completed their line up, set and are ready to take on the challenge of this season's Premier League with the return of a former Newcastle favourite, 26-year-old, Falkirk-born Derek Sneddon, writes LAWRENCE HEPPELL.

Sneddon comes fresh from a hugely successful 2008 when he captained the Edinburgh Monarchs to the title, but with teams built on accumulative averages, his "home" side were unable to fit him in for this year, much to Newcastle's delight.

Sneddon was part of the Newcastle team in 2002, before returning to parent club Edinburgh. After an accident, he returned to speedway and the Monarchs in 2006 where he has remained ever since.

Newcastle co-promoter George English said: "I'm over the moon we've been able to tempt Derek back to Tyneside as he was always a very popular figure with the Newcastle fans and he is capable of some very big scores as we've seen in the past.

"Once it became apparent he could not be included in Edinburgh's squad, we were very eager to get him back. …
