JOHN Simpson accepts his Commonwealth featherweight title fight against Teessider Paul Truscott in Middlesbrough next Friday could make or break his career.

The Greenock fighter lost his British title to fellow Scot Paul Appleby last summer in a closely-fought battle at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall.

His quest for a rematch with Appleby was handed a boost with a points win over lanky Kenyan John Gicharu at Glasgow's Bellahouston Sports Centre at the end of November.

However, that could count for nothing if he leaves the Eston Sports Academy without the Commonwealth belt and a seventh loss against his record after 25 bouts. But Simpson, 25, insists he will be travelling south with renewed enthusiasm. "I know how important this fight is to me, definitely," he said.

"If I lose against Truscott then not only am I not the Commonwealth champion, I will go down the pecking order with regards getting a rematch with Paul Appleby.

"So it's one of the most important fights of my career. …
