MEET Spike - the newly-named sunshine mascot who spreads the word about energy efficiency.

Six-year-old Katie-Anne Beckett, of Redcar's Green Gates Primary School, came up with the name for the 6ft-tall mascot after GoWarm approached the school for ideas.

Almost every name under the sun was suggested, but it was Katie-Anne's suggestion of Spike - Save Power and Insulate to Keep Energy in - which came out on top.

Samantha Fiske, headteacher at Green Gates, said: "It has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm of the children, using their imaginations to think up a name for the sun.

The whole exercise has left them feeling inspired about energy efficiency."

GoWarm director, Karen Hindhaugh, said: "We've had the mascot for some time now and whenever he goes to events, people ask what his name is.

"We struggled to come up with something suitable, so we approached the experts for help - the Key Stage One pupils at Green Gates Primary School. …
