AN international exhibition will be taking up residence in the culturallycomfy confines of the Ouseburn in Newcastle this week.

The 71st Annual Exhibition of the Society of Wood Engravers opens tomorrow at Northern Print. It is an international exhibition which will run until March 21 and is drawn from an open submission process.

More than 400 entries were submitted for the 2009 event, from a global pool of artists.

Hence visitors to the exhibition will see work from Japanese, Canadian, American, Bulgarian, UK and Russian artists ... to name but a few.

As far as Anna Wilkinson, director of Northern Print is concerned, having the exhibition in the North East couldn't be more appropriate.

She says: "The North East is considered by many to be the home of wood engraving, so we're delighted to welcome this travelling exhibition to the region for the first time in its histor y.

"It certainly promises to be a diverse and rewarding experience for anyone who walks through the doors.

"It will include everything from examples of exquisite engraving - keeping the tradition of our own Thomas Bewick alive - to the more abstract and experimental work.

"Increasingly, artists who work in skill-based, traditional media struggle to be noticed in a world dominated by digital technology but, in this exhibition, they proudly hold their place."

The printing technique involves wood, plastic or lino that is cut away to leave a white shape or texture with everything remaining untouched printing as black. The majority of prints in the exhibition, from artists such as Anita Klein, Simon Brett, Yoshimara Mishio and Anne Desmet, come in limited editions, some as small as five, with a few open editions without limit.

Anna says: "The work is available for purchase at surprisingly affordable prices. Any prints ordered will be posted on."
