Q HOW can I help my six-year-old son make more friends? He has just one best friend who recently moved away. He is shy and finds it difficult to start conversations or play with other children. We live in a remote area with no local children.

A THE ability to make and retain friends is a skill that can be taken for granted. For parents there seems to be a huge raft of support for helping their children to learn academically but not always socially, yet good social skills are vitally important.

There are a few things that parents can do to help.

Just as some children find reading or maths difficult, some find socialising and making new friends difficult. It is important to remember that not all children are social butterflies. Some will naturally have a large group of friends, while others choose to have one or two good friends.
