A GRUDGE attacker risked tragedy when he hurled a petrol bomb at a crowded seaside hotel.

The New Royal, in Whitley Bay, was fully booked with 100 guests and its Eden nightclub busy with Bank Holiday revellers when Owen Young struck.

He plotted revenge after clashing with door staff at the hotel, later confessing he "hated bouncers".

The 19-year-old headed home after the early hours row, made a firebomb from a bottle, petrol and kitchen roll, and headed back to the hotel. Young lit the bomb and flung it at one of the windows.

Luckily the toughened glass did not shatter, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

The bottle rebounded, smashed on the ground, and burnt out safely.

And although Young, of Marwick Road, North Shields, first denied he was to blame he later admitted attempted arson being reckless whether life would be endangered.

Sending him to a Young Offenders Institution for two and a half years, Judge Guy Whitburn said: "The potential was very serious. …
