MIGHTY Marske United marched into the last 16 of the FA Vase with a magnificent 3-2 win at VCD Athletic.

The second division Seasiders took a two goal lead against the Kent side then dug in for the tense last 10 minutes in the fourth round of the minnows' national knockout competition.

"The last 10 minutes was the longest ever in my entire career as they piled on the pressure," said delighted boss Paul Burton.

"To score three away from home against a team from a higher league is fantastic but I was always confident we could spring a surprise."

Backed by a loud 100- strong travelling army of supporters, the Seasiders had the best of a goalless first half and went close as Craig Skelton burst through to be denied in a one-on-one with the keeper.

But Marske took the lead two minutes after the break when Steve Cochrane curled a sizzling 25-yard free-kick into the top corner.

And Skelton made it two 10 minutes later as a quick break down the right sent him skipping into the box to hammer home a 15-yard drive.

VCD pulled one back with a Rice free-kick on 68 minutes but almost immediately Marske restored the margin as Glen Wesson drilled home from inside the box.

The home side grabbed a lifeline as Duckworth struck on 79 minutes and Marske had to dig deep as VCD piled on the pressure in the closing stages. …
