MUSIC

WHAT'S YOUR PRICE FOR FLIGHT?

Of all the regrettable trends in music history (new wave, disco. rap metal), perhaps none was as nerve-grating as the power ballad. You know, those '80s/'90s songs by rock bands that featured piano, acoustic guitars, sappy lyrics and a bombastic guitar solo.

We blame REO Speedwagon, which was a pretty decent rock band that stumbled across Keep on Loving You and created a movement.

But plenty of bands jumped on the Speedwagon bandwagon and soon you couldn't turn on MTV (history lesson for the kids: they used to show music videos) without running into, say, Sister Christian or Every Rose Has Its Thorn.

So we're collecting power ballads. Send a quick list of your favorites (or least favorites) to backtalk@jacksonville.com and we'll share them with the world.

Now, where did we put that hairspray and Spandex?

PRESS RELEASE OF THE WEEK

HAIL TO THE (HIC) CHIEF

The PR folks representing Three Olives Vodka aren't ones to miss an opportunity. Hence their release suggesting libations for the inauguration celebration. They recommend the Three-O-Bama (grape vodka, blue curacao and Red Bull), the Cosmo-Bama (berry vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice and lime juice) and - sure to crank up the Fox News crowd - the Whitehouse Russian (vodka, espresso and cream).

That leads us to wonder: What drinks would have been appropriate had one of the other candidates been elected? McCain's McChampagne? The Huckabee-na Colada. The Tancredo Mojito?
