Letter: VOICE OF THE NORTH - Silver Surfers Are Paying the Price

I READ The Journal every day at work (mainly the nebusiness section), but the headline "Perhaps the silver surfers could bail us out" on Helen Dalby's column caught my attention (The Journal, January 15).

Please point out to Mrs Dalby that those of us who do not work in the public sector (a diminishing band here in the North East) will most definitely not retire on "one of those very tidy final salary deals".

I am the same age as Mrs Dalby's mother and really took offence at having my nose rubbed in it. Those of us of a certain age, who do get out of bed and work for a living, have to put up with the vision of our public sector peers smugly hiding behind their final salary pensions that we have contributed to and still do and will do for the foreseeable future.

Of course, deserving public sector employees need our support and financial input, but I bet some employees in this sector will hang on to their petty little jobs solely on the back of the promise of a final salary pension. …
