No Doubting Ice Starlet Thomas Has Real Talent

STARLET Thomas Etherington is getting his skates on in the hope of major ice hockey success.

The 16-year-old from Tynemouth, a member of the Newcastle Vipers Academy's under-18 side, has gained selection to the Northern of England Conference under-17 squad.

Forward Etherington, who has been playing the sport since he was nine, will be making his first appearance in the party.

He gained his place after coming through a series of trials in Sheffield and a two-day development camp - and is one of 10 North players to be selected for the 2008-09 party.

The others are fellow Newcastle forwards Graham Robson and Callum Davies, Whitley Bay forwards Jack Watkins, James Moss and Nathan Ryder and Bay defencemen Josh Maddock, Mitch Houghton, Matty Sellers and Jack Stevenson.

The squad will contest a tournament in the Czech Republic in April before taking on other conference squads from around the country in a competition in Hull in May.

It is seen as a stepping-stone to eventual selection to the full England junior side. …
