IT IS always nice to spend pleasant hours with good friends, especially when Newcastle United are providing precious little to raise spirits.

So to share the company of United's European Fairs Cup winning skipper Bob Moncur and former chairman Sir John Hall on two special occasions over the last 48 hours proved an oasis among the Magpie misery.

First came the ceremony at the Shipley Art Gallery to confer the Freedom of the Borough of Gateshead upon Bob.

There was a great turn-out,including former United stars Frank Clark, Malcolm Macdonald, John Craggs and Jim Pearson, excoach Keith Burkinshaw and Sir Bobby Robson who, like Moncur, has raised lots of money for cancer research.

Two other freemen, Brendan Foster and Mike Neville, were also in attendance.

A treasure trove of local celebs, some like Clarkie and Burky travelling a considerable distance to be present.

Bob Moncur represents all that is great and good about United.

He has dignity, a considerable presence, courage, leadership and a trustworthiness, commodities which are currently in short supply on the top floor of St James's Park. …
