AFTER stretching their unbeaten record to nine games with a resounding victory at Warrington Town on Saturday, Newcastle Blue Star are confident they can sustain a promotion challenge in the UniBond League Division One North.

New boy David Southern, captain Steve Bowey and prolific scorer Paul Brayson swept the Tynesiders to an emphatic 4-0 win, leaving them in seventh position, 14 points adrift of leaders FC Halifax Town with seven games in hand.

"I think Durham City and Skelmersdale United pose the biggest threat," said director of football Bob Morton.

"Yes, FC Halifax Town and one or two other clubs are in the running with points on the board, but I'm sure the sides who have more games to play will pick up a lot of points.

"We were at our best against Warrington and could easily have scored more goals.

"I said that David Southern would be a perfect partner for Paul Brayson and judging by Saturday's first pairing, they'll cause most defences a lot of problems. …
