GATESHEAD Thunder went down 28-16 to Leigh East in their rearranged National Youth League match at Bullocksteads.

Having won the toss, Gateshead elected to play with the wind for the first half.

They claimed the game's first score after eight minutes through Marcus Broad, but Dan Mole's conversion drifted just wide. It was Thunder who, through quick plays of the ball from kick-off, scored again after only 10 minutes through the excellent running of Crawford Matthews.

Mole duly scored the conversion from under the posts.

Leigh were slightly on the back foot, but against the run of play Sam Hopkins scampered over the try line for Leigh's first try of the game, Steven Grundy missing the conversion to make the score 10-4.

It took until the 22nd minute for the next score - and this went to Gateshead courtesy of superb running and excellent ball interchange between Matthews and Mark Dack, which ended with Dack crossing the line to take the try. …
