Caring's Novel Way to Beat the Queue at White's; Join Our Club: Richard Caring Has Been Spotted at White's, Haunt of Cameron's

IT'S enough to make a club bore splutter into his soup. A story has been circulating in St James's Street, that Richard Caring, the clothing millionaire who recently bought the late Mark Birley's Mayfair chain of clubs, has his beady eye on White's, the gentlemen's watering hole which until the other day boasted David Cameron among its members.

Rumour has it Caring was dining with a member of White's when it was suggested that, despite the fact that he already owned such nearby dives as Annabel's, Harry's Bar, Mark's Club and George, he should join this establishment networking den. Caring was quite interested until he heard there was a seven year waiting list, whereupon he suggested it might be easier if he bought the entire outfit. It's not clear whether he was joking, but the old boys have been chattering at the bar ever since.

Millfield educated Caring, who is fond of shooting, is a cheerful well-dressed fellow who knows how to hold a knife and fork and wouldn't frighten the horses but, all the same, the idea of being lumped together with preppy American hedge fund managers who hang about in Mayfair didn't appeal to aristocratic White's members. …
