Recruiting Update

Article excerpt

With national signing day three days away, Florida, Florida State, Miami and Georgia are scrambling to finish their recruiting classes with a successful conclusion. Here's a look at where each program stands.

The must get: Maryland linebacker Jelani Jenkins is one of the highest-rated recruits in the country. The Gators have battled Penn State for his services and appear to be the leader. Losing Jenkins would sting. Most analysts have him penciled in to UF.

The luxury item: The Gators have turned Pensacola Escambia running back Trent Richardson from an Alabama lock to a tossup. If UF can snag Richardson, it would be the surprise of the national recruiting year and an absolute coup for Urban Meyer.

The wild card: Sanford Seminole receiver Andre Debose committed to Florida in January, but he took an official visit to FSU this weekend. UF is counting on Debose to provide the playmaking ability it loses with the departure of Percy Harvin. Losing Debose, who also continues to be courted by LSU and Miami, would be a huge blow.

The buzz: The Gators are anxious, but they seem to be in prime position to finish as well as any team in the country on signing day.

The must get: Man, would FSU love to snag former Florida commitment Greg Reid, the standout cornerback out of Lowndes. Reid is an incredible talent and would instantly upgrade FSU's athleticism. Plus, 'Noles fans could rub it in their hated rival's face.

The luxury item: Tallahassee Lincoln safety Jawanza Starling would be tough to see head out of town, but FSU has done a good job of landing commitments from other defensive backs. Starling would be a great get, but he won't make or break the class.

The wild card: West Gadsden defensive tackle Gary Brown has been committed to UF for several months. However, there have been countless rumors of him possibly wavering and signing with FSU. If the 'Noles land Brown to go with arguably the nation's top defensive tackle in Jaccobi McDaniel, FSU's line will be scary.

The buzz: The Seminoles likely will land one of their major targets, but they probably won't close with the same fury as they have in the past. …
