A 38-year-old cabbie who helped an elderly passenger to her door early Monday ended up getting robbed by a man who jumped into her cab while she was outside the home in the 5500 block of West Fifth Street.

The cab driver had just walked her fare to the front door at 1:55 a.m. and gotten back behind the wheel when someone in the back seat looped a seat belt around her neck and held her in place, police said. The man in the back seat ordered the cab driver to drive away, ordering her to hand over money. The cab driver handed over the cash in her pockets, but he asked for more. She handed over her wallet and the man told her to pull over at the intersection of West Fifth Street and Ellis Road.

The man fled, and the cab driver called police from a nearby convenience store. A police search of the area turned up nothing.

Following are the crimes and other incidents reported recently on the Westside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office:

-Someone shot out a car window around 11:15 a.m. Jan. 20 as its 23-year-old driver was headed down Interstate 10 near Lane Avenue.

The woman told police she saw a gray 4-door Ford Crown Victoria in the right lane as she was headed west. When she passed alongside it, she heard a gunshot and her right front passenger window shattered. State troopers in the area told the woman they heard nothing, and police didn't find any bullets or shotgun pellets among the shattered glass.

-A tall slim man with a gun invaded the back room of a T-Mobile office at 8050 Applecross Road on Jan. 22. But the 31-year-old employee inside saw what the intruder was carrying and ran away to call police. When police arrived, no one was in the store and nothing was missing.

- A 28-year old Westside man was arrested Monday morning on charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, two counts shooting into an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after an incident outside a home in Ponte Vedra Beach, police said. …
