COMPUTER shop boss Mark Skelton was left to take stock when he bought some display hooks for his new business.

For part of the "lot" he snapped up for just a tenner was a set of pillory stocks!

Mark attended the January 28 auction, at Darlington's Lithgow Sons and Partners, to equip his new business, Eazy PC of West Terrace, Redcar.

He paid pounds 10 for the rack of display hooks, which originated from Direct Fabrics of Leadenhall Street, Darlington, and which came on a sheet-covered display board.

But when he got it all home, he found the sheet was covering a set of stocks.

Dating back to 1776, and with various initials carved in the wood, the authentic-looking stocks seemed like they could be a historically valuable find.

Experts from Redcar's Kirkleatham Museum have since confirmed them to be a very good fake.

But they're so quirky, Mark will keep them on display when his shop opens tomorrow.

And he hopes Gazette readers may be able to shed light on the stocks' history. …
