TROLLEY FUNDS ON HOLD, FOR NOW

Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach are holding off on committing money to the Beaches Trolley system.

The Neptune Beach City Council agreed last week that it is still interested in eventually funding the trolley, but that it cannot find money in the budget to help pay for the service.

Atlantic Beach commissioners voted to approve $5,000 for the service, but with conditions.

The commission will release the funds to the service only if a $1 fare is charged and if the service, which travels between Jacksonville Beach and Atlantic Beach, mostly on Third Street, continues farther west on Atlantic Boulevard once it reaches Atlantic Beach. The commission wants to see the trolley continue to Mayport Road.

LANDRUM STUDENT WINS SPELLING BEE

Caroline Snowden, a seventh-grader at Landrum Middle School, won the 2009 St. Johns County School District Spelling Bee Friday at the School Board Administration Center. She won by correctly spelling the word "lieutenant."

Caroline is the daughter of Catherine and Todd Snowden of Ponte Vedra Beach.

Thirty elementary and middle-school students from 25 public, one charter and four private schools competed to represent St. Johns County in the Saturday, Feb. 21, Regional Spelling Bee in Jacksonville. Andrew Knuppel of Fruit Cove Middle School is the runner-up.

The annual spelling bee is sponsored by The Florida Times-Union. The winner of the regional bee will advance to the national spelling bee Sunday, May 24, to Friday, May 29, in Washington.

FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE IN ST. JOHNS

Fathers are invited to escort their elementary school-aged daughters to the St. Johns County Recreation and Parks Department's second annual Father Daughter Dance on Friday.
