Fight to Keep Electric Jobs in North East; NATIONAL GRID EMPLOYEES FEAR WORK WILL BE OUTSOURCED

MORE than 150 National Grid workers on Tyneside have been given two months to persuade bosses not to outsource their jobs.

Fears have been raised that around 180 staff carrying out orders, invoicing and payroll functions for the energy provider at the Quorum Business Park site, on Benton Lane, could be at risk from outsourcing abroad.

National Grid had proposed inviting external companies to see whether they could deliver the services, raising fears of jobs going to India or the Far East, sparking an intervention from local MPs.

And last night, a company spokesman said: "The employees were obviously aware of the review.

"We have told them today that we are delaying for about two months those invitations to those outside companies."

He added: "So it is going to give us more time to see if there are any further internal improvements we can make.

The invitations to external companies will now go out just before Easter. …
