MORE North East celebrities have given our Think North East First campaign their backing. Rock legend Mark Knopfler revealed his support for the campaign aiming to help his home region.

The Dire Straits frontman said: "Of course I support anything which helps the North East.

"I just found out where all the de-icer for airplanes is made - in Haltwhistle. There's plenty of de-icer needed at the moment.

"I'm all in favour of people supporting the North East and buying products made here. I think manufacturing needs all the help it can get. So I hope that stays in people's minds."

Popular Tyneside couple Denise Welch and Tim Healy also said they supported The Journal, calling our campaign 'a brilliant idea'.

Denise said: "I'll support anything which helps the North East, especially in these difficult times.

"This campaign needs as many people to get behind it as possible.

"We'll always do all we can for the region."

Tim revealed that at home the couple often enjoy the delights of North East produce.

"I think we keep the region in pease pudding," he said.

"We buy plenty in and we make it when we can too.

"And we enjoy kippers from Craster. I like a kipper between some brown bread at lunchtime. I hadn't realised Hovis is made in Newcastle, but we certainly enjoy a bit of that too.

"And of course you can't beat a bit of Newcastle Brown Ale, a bottle of the dog."

On Friday we published our list of 50 ways you can make a difference to the North East.

Now we want to publish another list - of your suggestions as we build on the success of our Think North East First campaign.

All you need to do is head to where you'll find the section of our website dedicated to the campaign.

Just click on the link to tell us you think how we can support the North East. …
