TOURIST attractions and holiday accommodation in the region have enjoyed a record start to the year.

Newcastle's Centre for Life reported having the best February half-term ever, boasting a 12% revenue increase on this time last year and a 10% rise in visitors numbers.

Northumberland holiday cottages have also enjoyed a busy start to the year and have seen increase in bookings for the coming 12 months. Linda Conlon, chief executive of Centre for Life, said they had seen a definite increase in the number of foreign visitors coming through their doors.

She said: "We have noticed that there has been an increase of non-local people coming to the Centre for Life. During the first period of 2009, we have had a steady stream of visitors coming from the ferries and cruise liners.

"We have just had the busiest half term I can remember - more than 10,000 people have used either the ice rink of the centre. We have found that, on average, a family tend to spend around pounds 50, which is great. …
