THE complimentary ticket awaiting Ryan Taylor may go unused, but for the man leaving it on the gate for Newcastle's latest signing, Hillheads is the only place to be this afternoon, writes STEVE BROWN.

If only to continue his quest to exorcise the demons of last season.

Then, Paul Robinson was an integral and mercurial part of Whitley Bay's run to the FA Vase semi-finals, where the Seahorses lost the opening leg 4-0 at Lowestoft Town and, agonisingly, won the return leg 3-0.

Talk about so near and yet so far.

Now, though, with Whitley hosting Stratford Town in today's fifth round Vase tie, Robinson is relishing the chance to make amends for last term - even if his old mate Taylor is not there to see it.

The pair were trainees at Tranmere Rovers together, and still keep in touch.

But while Robinson suspects Taylor will be unable to take up his invitation to attend the game, he is more hopeful about Whitley's prospects of progressing to the next round.

"I think Ryan's got training on Saturday, I'll give him a shout but I don't think he'll be coming down," Robinson

FA VASE PREVIEW said. "We're very confident, it's a home draw. We've been doing well lately, we're up there in the league and still in the League Cup, so it's a good chance for us.

"I know they're about mid-table in their league and they've got a Hungarian lad (Jozsef Jakab) up front who scores a few goals, so he'll be dangerous.

"But we know what it's all about and hopefully we can go one better and make up for last season. It was hard to take, especially after doing so well to come back in the second leg.

"Hopefully we can go again and get to the quarter-finals and beyond. We'll be all right, if we do what we're good at."

And they should be able to, coach Steve Cuggy believes, given today's game against the Aspire Midland Football Alliance outfit is at Hillheads. …
