ART often spills into the streets, but more rarely into shop windows. However, a new show of work in Sunderland by eight artists does just that.

Organised by Sunderland University digital media lab, In The City stages video, sound and sculptural installations in retail spaces.

Michelle Goulder is presenting her work Every day the people of Tbilisi wonder if the lights will come on in the window of Joplings department store. The work is inspired by the film Power Trip about the post-Soviet chaos of privatisation in Georgia's capital.

Michelle, 41, of Byker, Newcastle, says: "The film shows people using coloured wire to steal electricity from a US power company.

"When I saw the images of the cables, they reminded me of multi-coloured threads which my mam had at home.

"She was a dressmaker and after she died I inherited all her textiles." Another piece Michelle is showing is 2,000 people living in an ex-textiles factory suddenly found themselves homeless. …
