Open the pages of "The Awe-Manac: A Daily Dose of Wonder" by Jill Badonsky to find questions, activities and quotations designed to inspire writers.

For instance, the Feb. 23 page suggests making a list of nouns, a list of adjectives and a list of verbs. Use the words to make a poem in which each line starts with "It was a day of ..." Finish the line with a word from the lists.

If that exercise doesn't strike your fancy, try this: Write a poem or a short story that uses each of these entries from a word pool: uncover, live, original, start, chopsticks, turn, snap, special, corner, clock, appear, startling, watch, warn, please, puzzle and fragile. As these two examples indicate, "Awe-Manac" is a more than effective antidote to Blank Page Anxiety.

The specific, if unusual, suggestions paired with whimsical illustrations of mermaids, cats, doo-dads and birds riding bikes fairly beg for writers to add something original to the pages. Though the journal is dated from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, it doesn't really matter where you begin.

Badonsky lives in San Diego. According to the bio on the book flap, she travels the United States, leading workshops for "groups of individuals craving more creative joy."
