I read with anger and disgust about the policeman driving 98 mph to catch a traffic violator. He took the life of an 86-year-old man while doing so and is still performing duties as a traffic enforcement officer. Are we stupid, or what? He needs to be taken out of a police car and retrained on safety and emergency response. He is a danger to all of us.


If the standard operating procedure of the Jacksonville [Sheriff's Office] truly allows an officer to disregard human life and exceed the speed limit by 58 mph, then I suggest it be changed. There is no traffic violation that is worth taking the life of innocent people. ... [T]he officer was cited twice for speeding in 1998 and once in 2000. He ran a stop sign in 1999. The warning signs were there.


Sheriff Rutherford: Yes, I am critical of public servants when they screw up, but I also send "thank yous" when appropriate. This is not one of those pat-on-the-back moments. This officer of yours committed an act of vehicular homicide, period. But I know you will stand by your officer, regardless.


Our Republican friends in Washington are claiming a return to the true religion, hung over after eight years of profligacy and military aggression. They reduced to $54 billion the proposed $80 billion in the stimulus bill for much-needed federal financial assistance to the states and locales. Some Southern GOP governors assert they don't need or want assistance from the federal government. This blase attitude isn't going to go down well as middle-class folk start needing government assistance and can't get through to beleaguered state agencies by phone, fax, e-mail or in person. ... Pitchforks, anyone?


I know this is not politically correct. However, as an African-American female, I find the theory of evolution offensive. After all, Hitler loved Darwin's ideology. If I pay taxes for children to learn that we came from monkeys, slime or a bang, then they should have the same opportunity to consider the creation account, which has been around for more than 6,000 years. …
