THE 29th Blaydon Race looks set to boast a strong field - no matter what, writes STEVE BROWN.

So while race organiser Bob Houston expects the likes of last year's winner Ayele Mergessa, from Ethiopia, and locals Ian Hudspith and Ryan McLeod to figure once again, the only fly in the ointment are Boy zone.

The Irish crooners are due to perform at Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena on Tuesday, June 9, a date that's long since become synonymous with the running of the now 5.9-mile race.

That has left race organisers in negotiations with the Arena, Newcastle City Council and the emergency services over the most suitable course of action, given the route's proximity to the venue and the potential for traffic problems.

But the worst problem Houston anticipates is a slight alteration to the previously scheduled 7.15pm start. "We might have to change it by 10 or 15 minutes," he confirmed. "Boy zone are playing at the Arena on the same night so we're in talks with the relevant authorities. …
