Filled with hearty ingredients, Hormel Chili 'N Mac Chili Meals are easy to throw into the microwave and heat but, on the surface, don't look very exciting.

"I wasn't looking forward to [eating] it," said telephone service technician Charlie Freeman.

"It didn't look good," said third-grade teacher Marjie Rogozinski, who was reluctant as well.

But looks can be deceiving.

"It was really surprising," said Freeman, who described the chili 'n mac as a mixture of red beans, beef flavor, a small amount of macaroni and a lot of sauce. "It's perfectly seasoned and has a little bit of heat and a really good, thick, tasty sauce. It's a great combination."

He ate the single-serve meal for dinner and said if you added a salad and some bread, it would make a satisfying meal.

"I'll buy it again. We like to have that kind of thing on board for storms or a quick meal. We had low expectations of this, but it's No. 2 on the list of our favorites so far."

After trying the chili 'n mac with hamburgers, Rogozinski also changed her mind. "It's actually good. It looks like a product for kids but if an adult tried it, they would really be surprised."

She found the dish well seasoned, with just a hint of heat, and said it's a good choice for those who don't like spicy foods. "I like a lot of sauce, and this has a really good thick consistency and is not overwhelmingly tomatoey. It's a good belly filler and a great little pick-me-up snack."

Marketing manager John Moore said the chili 'n mac makes a great meal on a cold night. "I'm a chili mac man; it was perfect for me," he said.

He described the dish as having plenty of beef, some in big chunks, and a good amount of macaroni and sauce.

"The macaroni blended into the dish very well and absorbed some of the sauce, so you didn't just have a bowl of chili. It's a little small serving-wise, but if you had a vegetable or some garlic toast, it would make a perfect meal. …
