THE wraps come off two new exhibitions in Hartlepool tomorrow.

Work by artists TOM MALEY and ROBERT WILSON will be on show until April 19 at the town's Art Gallery.

Thousands of Boro fans will pass work by Tom Maley every week because the North-east artist's commissions include creating the 8ft tall bronze figure of Boro legend Wilf Mannion which stands outside the Riverside Stadium.

His latest exhibition is entitled The Return of Icarus - Sculpture by Tom Maley.

In Greek mythology, Icarus attempts to escape from imprisonment by using wings made of wax and feathers to fly away ... but he flew too close to the sun, the wax melted and Icarus fell to his death.

Here, the Icarus myth is retold by Tom, through sculpture for a post-industrial age.

He is a man, his wings are made of bronze and steel and he has got V12 automotive assistance with the exhaust system of a Formula One car!

This exhibition of architectural and carefully engineered sculpture showcases Tom's ingenuity of design, his flair for artistry and his often wicked sense of humour.

Tom's father began his working life as a colliery fitter before becoming an engineer in the Merchant Navy and then becoming an art and craft teacher.

A talented sculptor in his own right, he encouraged his children to develop their own talents and Tom started sculpting as a child.

A self taught sculptor, designer and architect with a background in mechanical design, Tom's work is based on the human figure but will often contain contemporary mechanical elements to further illustrate and develop a given subject or idea.

"Today my interests range from developing, designing and producing sculpture," says Tom.

"This proves to be both dynamic and entertaining and ranges from civic bronzes to fabricated metal abstract structures. …
