It's Tough for Superheroes; Film of the Week: Watchmen

The adventures of crime-fighters The Comedian, Dr Manhattan, Silk Spectre II, Nite Owl 2, Ozymandias and Rorschach are set in an alternative 1980s where Richard Nixon is still the US President, America has won the Vietnam War and the threat of nuclear holocaust remains as tension continues between the States and the Soviet Union.

Here's the lowdown on four of these alternate superheroes.

MALIN AKERMAN - SILK SPECTRE II (Laurie Juspeczyk) Malin thought wearing Silk Spectre II's famous latex suit would be fun, but she soon realised she was wrong.

"I think latex is super sexy when you see it on someone else, but when you're the one wearing it, it's like putting a rubber band on your whole body," she admits.

"It takes on whatever temperature it is and then magnifies it. So if we were shooting outside and it was freezing, it made me extra cold, and if it was indoors and hot, it made it extra hot."

The Swedish-born 30-year-old underwent rigorous training to fit her curves into her costume.

"It was intense torture. Towards the end, we were doing dead lifts of 155 pounds. It was things I never imagined myself doing. They pushed me to the limit."

BILLY CRUDUP - DR MANHATTAN (Jon Osterman) The 40-year-old admits he had to overcome looking "ridiculous" to play Dr Manhattan, the only superhero with superhuman powers. Scientist Jon Osterman's atoms were smashed during a lab accident, but he reconstructed himself as the naked blue-skinned superhuman.

"I did very little, but put on a pair of intricate pyjamas and stand on boxes," says Billy.

"It was mostly uncomfortable for my ego, because you finally get to play the super buff master of all matter, and you're just standing around in saggy pyjamas and standing on boxes looking ridiculous."

MATTHEW GOODE - OZYMANDIAS (Adrian Veidt) Matthew had no idea what was in store for him once he was cast as Ozymandias, the smartest member of the group. …
