Crooked Cactus Burns with Taste from South of Border

Article excerpt

THE Crooked Cactus offers you the complete Mexican experience - bright decor, vibrant Mexican music, authentic meals and over 30 different tequilas.

There is nowhere else in Rockhampton where you can immerse yourself in the Mexican atmosphere.

Owners Jeffrey and Samantha Kuhl, along with Mexican expat Vicky Magana and cook Kirsten Reid, have designed a menu to cater for all tastes.

A great start to your Mexican Fiesta is a platter of corn chips accompanied by your choice of dips such as guacamole, salsa or the warm cheese and chilli dip - chilli con queso.

There are several light meals or entrees to choose from, such as quesadillas with a filling of prawns & feta or chorizo & cheese or Roasted Jalapenos stuffed with mozzarella cheese, lightly battered and fried.

The main meals are extensive and range, from enchiladas with flour tortillas dipped in a green or red enchilada sauce, rolled around your choice of meat, topped with cheese and served with Mexican rice and piggy beans, to Tequila Prawns - a delicious and unique recipe created by Samantha and Kirsten - which combines classic Mexican flavours such as tequila, lime and chilli with sumptuous king prawns.

If you would really like a feast, you must try the Crooked Cactus Sizzling Fajitas. A choice of marinated beef, chicken or prawns sauteed with capsicum and onion, sizzled with our special sauce and accompanied by a platter of salsa, guacamole, beans, rice, salad, sour cream and warm tortillas. And on Tuesday nights you can enjoy a Fajita and Frozen Margarita for only $20.

To complement the array of Mexican food is an equally impressive range of Mexican drinks.

Jugs of Sangria made fresh with oranges, limes, red wine and spices sell out quickly. There is a variety of Mexican beers including Don Equips, Pacifica, Modelo, Mexicali, Corona of course and just for the experience why not try the Chilli Beer.

You cannot truly enjoy the tastes of Mexico without sampling tequila and with more than 30 different types you are sure to find one that you like. …
