DEATH warmed up would have a good chance of beating local Noosa Festival of Surfing champion Josh Constable as he struggles to score a three-peat in the pro event early next week.

That is, if his rivals foolishly discount Constable's never-say-die spirit when he gets out on the water in competition - which they won't.

Peregian-based Constable has been literally out on his feet for the past six weeks battling a chronic bout of pneumonia.

The former world champion believes he has been laid low by a bid to get superfit for the year ahead, and fatherhood.

It is telling that Constable, who is the defending pro champion after also winning in 2006, first became bedridden at the time of the birth of his second son Jive.

"I've had an absolutely terrible lead up to the Noosa Festival - I've had pneumonia.

"I went surfing last week but was actually really weak - I've only really got back in the water for a surf yesterday.

"As it is, I'll only be about 60% right. …
