Thousands Sign Our Water Test Petition; Concerned Residents Say It's Time to Take Action

THOUSANDS have signed The Morning Bulletin's petition calling for fully independent testing of the Fitzroy River.

Bev Fehlhaber, who works at Frenchville News, is one of the petitioners.

Like hundreds in Frenchville she's so concerned about the state of the river and drinking water, she says it's time to take action.

"I've not drunk town water for the last two years and I might never drink it again," said Bev as she handed over the box packed with the names of people demanding a more thorough and transparent testing regime independent of government and the water companies.

Steve McKenna, the Liberal Nationals Party candidate for Keppel, was one of the last to sign the petition yesterday, convinced he had personally fallen victim to Rocky's impure water.

Mr McKenna, who lives in Yeppoon, says he normally only drinks bottled water when he visits Rockhampton.

But after quenching his thirst with some tap water he became sick with a tummy bug that laid him low for more than a week. …
